Usage Revenue

Track your metered or usage-based revenue with the Usage Revenue metric, available as its own dedicated stat and page in Baremetrics.

What It Is

Usage Revenue measures the gross revenue generated from usage-based or metered billing charges, such as API calls, data usage, or transaction volume.

  • This metric reflects gross values (refunds are not subtracted).

  • Refunded charges are excluded only in Net Revenue.

  • Refunded usage charges will be flagged directly in the customer-level charge list under “status” for additional clarity.

Why It Matters

Usage-based pricing models are increasingly common in SaaS and hybrid subscription businesses. This metric helps you:

  • Clearly separate fixed recurring revenue (MRR) from usage-based income

  • Get visibility into how much of your total revenue comes from metered billing

  • Segment usage revenue by plan to see which pricing tiers or product features generate the most metered income

  • Compare Usage Revenue alongside MRR, Other Revenue, and Net Revenue for a complete financial view

By tracking Usage Revenue over time, you gain a deeper understanding of customer behavior and predictability in your hybrid or consumption-based pricing models.

How It Works

  • Data Source: Currently available for Stripe.

Want to see it for another integration? Let us know - your feedback helps us prioritize what comes next.

  • Included Charges: Invoice line items with "usage_type": "metered" as defined in the Stripe Price object.

  • Calculation: Baremetrics sums all gross usage-based charges within the selected date range.

  • Segmentation: You can break down Usage Revenue by plan to see how individual products or tiers contribute to overall usage-based earnings.

Note: This metric only includes charges tied to metered components of your Stripe subscriptions. Fixed recurring items (like per-seat or flat-rate plans) are not included.

Example

If your Stripe integration includes a plan with usage-based components (for example, API calls billed monthly), Baremetrics will automatically detect and report those amounts under Usage Revenue.

You’ll see total Usage Revenue for your selected date range, historical comparisons (1 month, 3 months, 6 months, etc.), and percentage changes over time, just like your other revenue metrics.

Pro Tips

  • Combine this with MRR, Other Revenue, and Net Revenue to get a full picture of your revenue mix.

  • Set a goal directly on the Usage Revenue page to track growth in your metered revenue stream.

  • If you don’t see data, confirm your Stripe plans have usage-based line items configured and that you’re connected via Stripe (API-only sources are not yet supported).
